Looking For a Good Hunting Dog?

Growing up in the mountains of northern New York I was a big-dog person. I had a yellow Labrador that served as a guard dog and lived on the premise that “come one, come two, come three, I’ve got them.” On the trips home from school she would, if the window was open, teach the kids a lesson or two about the dangers of following a rowdy dog along the trail.

There is a whole lot of similarity between large dogs and hunting dogs. They both are up to the task, they can work out of pretty good distances from their handlers, and they’re often hard-headed to the point of obstinacy as they plod along after their noses.

This was the upbringing my husband and I had to face when we decided to get a bird dog. The parent dogs had already been trained for some years, but the pups were untrained as far as discipline meant go. Sure, they out- lineage him pretty well, but they were still dogs and would occasionally forget how to right themselves.

This is what we ended up doing for quite some time. We would take the pups out and let them run at the shoot out and around the woods. Yes, that’s what I thought. I unlearned all my thoughts of him not being a good dog. I focused on what I already knew about him.

I have learned a thing or two since I got him. Such as:

When I had the opportunity to get him a super treat, I invite him onto my lap. He goes nuts when I do that.

I give him a rubdown. He is a control freak.

I appreciate him showing up toumbrow [ saddle]with me; it means a lot.

It’s true that I have won his admiration and love. I know I do.

How to Crate Train Your Dog

Crate training a dog can be quite a challenge. For many of us we find the idea of crating our dogs’ appealing. The warmth and safety that this provides us is a great temptation for us. However, we don’t need to do this all the time.

The reason that this technique is not so good for your dog is because he is not going to see this as a safe area. He is going to view this as a prison and it his territory.

How will your dog feel about it?

Here are some things you can do to help him enjoy his crate.

Remember that crate training is all about providing a pleasant experience for your dog. It should not be a prison.

A tip from a friend who does program management and recently crate trained his lab told me, “Provide toys to make sure that he doesn’t become bored. Stuffed Kongs are great because they can be hollow in which you can place some goodies inside. This way, instead of going to town on his toys he won’t be inclined to chew on anything else.”

If he has some bones in it also, then this is a chewy alternative to bones.

Make sure that he can still go outside and play when he is in his crate.

You can place his blanket in his crate, if his favorite spot is not that of a crate.

If he wants to go out (and he should because he is a house dog) leave him a little time after he is used to his crate.

One of the biggest challenges for us is potty training a puppy. Crate training can help tremendously with this.

If you keep your puppy in a crate at night and then take him outside for a walk first thing in the morning, then you automatically part of the crate training when your puppy gets older.

This can help tremendously, especially at night, when you are trying to get him potty trained. This is also a good method for soothing your puppy when he is over excited.

For your crate training, put blankets with your dogs’ scent on it. One of my dogs has a blanket with her name on it. This way it is her blanket and she knows that she is herding at night and when she goes outside.

Don’t make that prison (oh what is there to say?) A nice place for your dog to sleep is a box, or a crate that is big enough for him and he can stretch out. But don’t leave him in there for a long time; it will become a place of his own and he will want to be there all day. Yes, we have made the crate part of the morning time routine so that he is in it for 8 or 10 minutes before we go to work. We plan on this being a daily occurrence for a while yet.

Just keep in mind that crate training and potty training are very different things. Crate training has more guidelines for you to follow, but potty training is a completely different ball game. If you potty train your dog properly, accidents will be rare and you will not have the smell of pee in your home for days and days.

Description: This is a medium-sized dog which is very strong and athletic. With the visual Spitz look, the Norwegian Elkhound is short and square to look at, which enhances their sturdy look. The question of the best dog food often bbs in the mind of the Buyer. I know that this can be tricky, because just as an Inherited recommendation by the Veterinarian can be the best thing to feed your dog, it can also be the worst thing to feed your dog. Here I will point out that the difference between good and bad food is often not as straight forward as most people assume.

So first of all, Dog food can be dangerous, and I am not just talking about the typical, household variety of dog food. When you are adopting a pet you need to take care of several things. First of all you need to love your pet and take care of them in return. If you don’t love them they become miserable and bored. The joy a pet can give to a family is invaluable. Animals are a great source of entertainment and love, no matter what age you have in your family.

Make sure your pet is spayed or neutered before adopting. Spaying and neutering helps to keep them from producing unwanted babies. If you neuter an animal you are helping to keep them safe and more likely to roam if they are not spayed or neutered.

Find out what shots they need to get. This could be for rabies or others. Prevention is a huge part of an animal’s life. Keeping them on a regular schedule is the best thing you can do. When you get your pet their yearly checkups should ensure they are cancer free.

In fact, it is often difficult to spot the signs of hip dysplasia in dogs that are puppies. The effects of the condition may not become evident till the dog reaches 5 years of age. When your dog spreads the ligament, the thigh bone or bony mass, it causes wear and tear as the ligament breaks down. The bones rubbing against each other produces friction that can sometimes lead to rupture.
